McKinley County Fire & Rescue was dispatched around 12:40 p.m. Friday after the train derailed and caught fire off Interstate 40 near the state line. Six of the derailed train cars were carrying propane, according to BNSF Railway. There is currently “no projected end to this closure,” said New Mexico State Police on Facebook. “I am deeply concerned about the train derailment along the Arizona-New Mexico border and am monitoring the situation closely,” Hobbs wrote.

The wounded man, a Hopi Native man from Seattle, Washington, was in critical condition at University of New Mexico Hospital in Albuquerque awaiting surgery, said Mateo Peixinho, an organizer for the protest rally.

[1/2] Governor of New Mexico Michelle Lujan Grisham speaks at a Democratic Party of New Mexico campaign rally featuring U.S. President Joe Biden at the Gallegos Community Center in Albuquerque, New Mexico, U.S., November 3, 2022. Bernalillo County Sheriff John Allen said he did not want to endanger his deputies by making them enforce the ban. "This order will not do anything to curb gun violence other than punish law-abiding citizens who have a constitutional right to self defense," Allen said at a press briefing. Lujan Grisham last week declared gun violence a public health emergency after an 11-year-old boy was shot dead in Albuquerque, apparently in an act of road rage. New Mexico State Police has not issued any citations, spokesman Ray Wilson said.

May 15 (Reuters) - At least four people, including a suspect, were killed in a shooting on Monday, police said, in a New Mexico town that has experienced at least two other high-profile incidents of deadly gun violence in recent years. Law enforcement closed off seven blocks around the shooting scene, an area that encompasses the grounds of two churches, police said. The gun violence also prompted security lockdowns at several public schools in Farmington, a city of about 46,000 residents. Police said after the suspect was killed that there was no longer a threat to the public, and the lockdowns were lifted. Farmington also was the scene of a deadly high school shooting in December 2017 in which a gunman killed two students before taking his own life.

Three people, including a shooter, were killed in Farmington, N.M., on Monday in an encounter that also left two police officers and multiple civilians injured, the authorities said. The Farmington Police Department said that it had responded to an active shooter situation on Monday and that multiple officers were involved “in an officer-involved shooting” but did not release any further details. The police said the shooter, whose identity was unknown, was confronted and killed on the scene. The police said in a statement on Facebook that there were “multiple civilian victims with at least 3 deceased.” The shooting is being investigated by the Farmington Police Department, San Juan County Sheriff’s Office and the New Mexico State Police. The shooting happened near North Dustin Avenue and East Navajo Street, Shanice Gonzales, a spokeswoman for the police department, said.
A suspect was in custody Monday in a string of shootings that may have targeted Democratic leaders in Albuquerque, officials said Monday. "Those elected officials deserve to be able to do their jobs as part of American democracy without fear, and especially without fear in their homes." Last week, after the other shootings were widely reported, Martinez asked officers to investigate the incident, police said. The Democratic Party of New Mexico said in a statement it is "deeply troubled" by the shootings. "I share the anger of my fellow elected officials and all those who have been targeted by such senseless acts of violence," he said.
